We chose Vernonia Springs for our 6th annual Wenzel Coaching cyclocross clinics because we love the variety of terrain, proximity to Portland, quality facilities including showers and, most of all, the beautiful setting!
The single track trails at Vernonia Springs are more dynamic and technical than a lot of cyclocross race courses, so it was easy to effectively teach bike handling and strategic skills including cornering, how to read a course, climbing and descending techniques, passing, starts and pacing. The open areas, gravel areas and varied trails gave us great places to practice cyclocross dismounts, remounts and barriers in a range of fields from smooth to bumpy, as well as on the trails for a racelike setting.
It’s hard to imagine a better venue for training and skills camps. We are excitedly planning more extensive weekend experiences for next year for cyclocross and mountain biking with options for camping, food service, family activities, evening movies, race videos and more. With the Banks-Vernonia bike path so convenient, we are also considering a road bike training camp! We can’t wait to come back!
