Beaver in the pond at Vernonia Springs

Turquoise Pond at Vernonia Springs

The other day I was standing on the dam and noticed our resident beaver making his daily rounds. I was surprised when he started swimming towards me and got out of the water … very cool! Beavers have very poor eyesight which explains why he would come so close. Initially we had problems with Beavers cutting down trees around the pond, but since wrapping the base of the trees with chicken wire they seem to be happy eating all of the grass, clover and small plants around the pond. They of course still attempt to plug up the culvert by adding a stick or some mud, but I just clear that stuff out once a week.
